data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The\u00a0<strong>huge prisons<\/strong>\u00a0were made of large\u00a0<strong>marble and Istrian stone blocks\u00a0<\/strong>and were intimidating and frightening. Still today we don\u2019t know how they were assembled. The\u00a0<strong>palace<\/strong>\u00a0was constructed in\u00a0<strong>1500<\/strong>\u00a0to create a more hygienic prison for the inmates and certain\u00a0<strong>judicial functions<\/strong>\u00a0of the Doge\u2019s Palace were also transferred there. It was later connected to the Palace via the famous\u00a0<strong><em>Bridge of Sighs<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0which was built in the early 1600s as a replacement to the previous wooden connections.<\/p><p>The prison\u2019s connection to the Doge\u2019s Palace just goes to show how important it was to the performance of judicial functions. This is the<em><strong>\u00a0first example in Europe<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0of the construction of a<strong>\u00a0palace exclusively for judicial and detention functions<\/strong>. The construction of the Palace was entrusted to the\u00a0<strong>same architect who built the\u00a0Rialto bridge<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Antonio da Ponte<\/strong>, further highlighting the significance of the structure to be built.<\/p><p>Inside the palace there are several very narrow corridors and cells which were divided into different areas depending on the severity of the prisoners\u2019 crimes and their wealth. There was also a women&#8217;s area and an infirmary as well as rooms where justice was served by\u00a0<strong>special magistrates<\/strong>\u00a0known as<strong>\u00a0the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Lords of the Night<\/strong>. The large portico we can see was a night-time shelter for many of Venice\u2019s beggars and underprivileged inhabitants.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da72d62 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"da72d62\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-acbfcc4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"acbfcc4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Prisoners and cells conditions <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab704c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab704c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>The prisoners<\/strong>\u00a0lived in very harsh conditions, even if they were among\u00a0<strong>the best of that period<\/strong>. A\u00a0<strong>special magistrate<\/strong>\u00a0was assigned to manage the prisons and a<strong>\u00a0doctor<\/strong>\u00a0with an\u00a0<strong>allocated sickbay<\/strong>\u00a0was always present to tend to prisoners. A\u00a0<strong>priest<\/strong>\u00a0also paid frequent visits to offer comfort to the prisoners. Unfortunately, these efforts were not enough. The condition of the prison remained very poor both for prisoners serving their sentence and for those awaiting trial.<\/p><p><strong>The main problem<\/strong>\u00a0was\u00a0<strong>poor hygiene<\/strong>\u00a0caused by overcrowded cells,<strong>\u00a0squalid conditions and humidity<\/strong>. This caused the spread of all kinds of\u00a0<strong>diseases<\/strong>, which were aggravated by the presence of<strong>\u00a0insects and mice<\/strong>, a major source of distress for the prisoners. Given the low survival rates of living in such unhealthy environments, imprisonment was often a death sentence.<\/p><p>The prisoners slept on a bench and used a\u00a0<strong>dirty bucket for a lavatory<\/strong>; the smell that pervaded the building was terrible. Throughout the year, the\u00a0<strong>cells<\/strong>\u00a0were periodically\u00a0<strong>washed with vinegar and quick lime<\/strong>. The prison doctor was obliged to pay daily visits to the prison and to prescribe drugs.\u00a0<strong>If prisoners could not afford the drugs they were paid for by the state<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-92ec57f elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"92ec57f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a0421ee elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a0421ee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What did the prisoners eat<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d73a8a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d73a8a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The prisoners received\u00a0<strong>wine and 2 half kilo loaves<\/strong>\u00a0a day.\u00a0<strong>Later on<\/strong>, the fresh bread was\u00a0<strong>replaced by biscuit bread<\/strong>\u2013 the same that was eaten on board the galleys.\u00a0<strong>Meals were improved<\/strong>\u00a0when<strong>\u00a0feasts<\/strong>\u00a0for the election of the Doge or important magistrates took place. At the\u00a0<strong>Carnival<\/strong>\u00a0there was a\u00a0tradition which involved cutting off\u00a0<strong>the head of a bull\u00a0<\/strong>and redistributing the meat to the prisoners.<\/p><p>Given the prisoners\u2019 terrible conditions, there were also various\u00a0<strong>charitable fraternities<\/strong>\u00a0that helped them and gave them comfort. About twice a week they gave the prisoners extra food in the form of broth and meat.<\/p><p><strong>Wine was a large part of the prisoners\u2019 diets and they would often pay the jailers for it<\/strong>; for certain periods, a kiosk selling wine was set up in the courtyard for those prisoners who could afford it.
