Although not the greatest of Hemingway\u2019s writings, there is nevertheless undeniable poignancy in its account of the survival of a beautiful city after war.<\/p><p>An\u00a0<strong>American Colonel<\/strong>\u00a0has led the allies to the area and returns to\u00a0<strong>Venice<\/strong>\u00a0in the last hours of his life. Looking over the water from afar, like so many before him, he praises the\u00a0<strong>Torcello\u00a0<\/strong>boys who first built the city. He identifies the campanile of\u00a0<strong>Burano<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>recalling the island\u2019s association with lace<\/strong>) ,\u00a0<strong>Murano<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>remembering its glass<\/strong>), and then Venice itself \u201cChrist what a lovely town\u201d.<\/p><p>Like most writing about Venice in the\u00a0<strong>twentieth century<\/strong>,\u00a0<em><strong>Across the river and Into the Trees<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is a\u00a0<strong>visitor\u2019s novel<\/strong>, although<strong>\u00a0not a tourist\u2019s novel<\/strong>. It is a tale of Death after visiting Venice, of Death occasined not by Venice, but by war injuries from allied service in the area.<\/p><p>The love affair between the\u00a0<strong>Colonel<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>young Contessa<\/strong>\u00a0is told without sentimentality or undue indulgence, at the end of a military life. The obligatory lovers\u00a0<strong>gondola<\/strong>\u00a0ride is taken with a bucket of champagne and a rug in winter. The\u00a0<strong>warming presence<\/strong>\u00a0of a day to day Venice, a Venice of the \u201ccold hard light of morning\u201d and of acqua alta, is felt throughout.<\/p><p>There is a memorable visit to the\u00a0<strong>Rialto<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Market<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cthe closest thing to a good museum \u2026.. to study the spread and high piled cheeses and sausages\u201d and to buy supplies for the duck- shooting expedition on the lagoon. The\u00a0<strong>Colonel<\/strong>\u00a0soon gravitates to\u00a0<strong>Harry\u2019s Bar<\/strong>\u00a0as the author so often did:\u00a0<strong>Hemingway<\/strong>\u00a0is the\u00a0<strong>bar\u2019s most famous visitor<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da72d62 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"da72d62\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-acbfcc4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"acbfcc4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Harry's Bar<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d49226d elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"d49226d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"239\" src=\"https:\/\/www.venicecitytours.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/harrys-bar.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-1268\" alt=\"Interior of Harry&#039;s Bar in Venice, with wooden furnishings and a warm atmosphere.\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.venicecitytours.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/harrys-bar.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.venicecitytours.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/harrys-bar-300x143.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab704c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab704c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>So frequently, Venice provokes recollection, both of its own past, and the past of its visitors. It releases the level of the oneiric, it hovers in the collective memory. As\u00a0<strong>the city\u2019s chic cocktail centre<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Harry\u2019s Bar<\/strong>\u00a0was the\u00a0<strong>meeting point<\/strong>\u00a0for the\u00a0<strong>post war influx of visitors<\/strong>, the place to be seen when crossing from the lido, or from the closer hotels.<\/p><p>It had opened modestly in\u00a0<strong>May 1931<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0<strong>one ground-floor room<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>four Windows<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>no view<\/strong>. From the\u00a0<strong>1960s<\/strong>\u00a0an\u00a0<strong>upstairs dining room<\/strong>\u00a0looked over the\u00a0<strong>Bacino\u00a0<\/strong>to<strong>\u00a0san Giorgio Maggiore<\/strong>. Harry\u2019s Bar came into its own with the\u00a0<strong>American influx<\/strong>\u00a0after the war.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8c88bf6 elementor-align-center elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-button\" data-id=\"8c88bf6\" data-element_type=\"widget\"
