Hemingway<\/strong>\u00a0called the\u00a0<strong>Gritti Palace<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cthe greatest hotel in a city of great hotels\u201d: what you see in fact is the wonderful<strong>\u00a0terrace<\/strong>\u00a0of the hotel\u2019s restaurant. It is hard to imagine a better spot in the world for a romantic dinner with delicious local food and wine.\u00a0 The<strong>\u00a0building<\/strong>\u00a0itself was the residence of Venice\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Doge Andrea Gritti<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>Renaissance<\/strong>, from whom it takes its name; became a\u00a0<strong>hotel<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>1895<\/strong>, over a century ago. Over the years, the\u00a0<strong>Hotel Gritti<\/strong>\u00a0has hosted countless\u00a0<strong>characters<\/strong>\u00a0from the\u00a0<strong>cinema<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>artists<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>writers<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Hemingway<\/strong>\u00a0famously staged a\u00a0<strong>midnight baseball game<\/strong>\u00a0in the hotel\u2019s lobby\u2014and instead of being reprimanded, the\u00a0<strong>Hotel manager<\/strong>\u00a0took 10 percent off his bill, since nobody had ever dared play the sport on the premises before.\u00a0Hence, perhaps, his high-praise for the hotel.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da72d62 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"da72d62\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-acbfcc4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"acbfcc4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Chiesa della Salute<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab704c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab704c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Here, as you come into the\u00a0<strong>Grand Canal<\/strong>\u00a0you are opened to the\u00a0<strong>Chiesa della Madonna della Salute<\/strong>. In the\u00a0<strong>17th century<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>Black Death<\/strong>\u00a0ravaged cities across\u00a0<strong>Europe<\/strong>, and had quickly wiped out two-thirds of\u00a0<strong>Venice\u2019s population<\/strong>. When the\u00a0<strong>Plague<\/strong>\u00a0was finally over, the\u00a0<strong>Doge of Venice<\/strong>\u00a0decided to build a\u00a0<strong>church<\/strong>\u00a0in honour of the\u00a0<strong>Madonna<\/strong>\u00a0as a thanksgiving token. And so, the task of building it went to\u00a0<strong>Baldassare Longhena<\/strong>, who was only 26 at the time, and would become the most important\u00a0<strong>baroque architect<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>Italy<\/strong>. The first thing that strikes a viewer is how imposing the church is, strategically placed at the entrance of the\u00a0<strong>Grand Canal<\/strong>\u00a0looking out onto the rest of the city in every direction, thanks to its circular shape.<\/p><p><strong>Longhena<\/strong>\u00a0chosed the\u00a0<strong>circular shape<\/strong>\u00a0with the intention of offering a\u00a0<strong>crown<\/strong>\u00a0to the\u00a0<strong>Madonna<\/strong>, with all its statues, buttresses and scrolls magnifying the pomposity of its architecture.<\/p><p>Today, every\u00a0<strong>21 November<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>city<\/strong>\u00a0celebrates the\u00a0<strong>Madonna della Salute<\/strong>\u00a0in memory of the\u00a0<strong>end of the plague<\/strong>, a\u00a0<strong>religious occasion<\/strong>\u00a0which is reality a special occasion for the people to celebrate an all-Venetian event with a small funfair in the\u00a0<strong>piazza<\/strong>\u00a0outside the\u00a0<strong>church<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-76357dc elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"76357dc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f3ceb33 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f3ceb33\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Punta della Dogana<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-517cb89 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"517cb89\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Today the\u00a0<strong>Punta della Dogana<\/strong>\u00a0is owned by the art collector\u00a0<strong>Fran\u00e7ois Pinault<\/strong>, who has converted it into a\u00a0<strong>Centre for Contemporary Art<\/strong>. However, until the\u00a0<strong>18th century<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Punta della Dogana<\/strong>\u00a0was once the\u00a0<strong>Customs area<\/strong>\u00a0where\u00a0<strong>foreign merchandise ships<\/strong>\u00a0coming in to the city had to pay their excise duty. Even the shape of this triangular strip of land resembles the prow of a ship, which separates the\u00a0<strong>Grand Canal<\/strong>\u00a0from the\u00a0<strong>Giudecca Canal<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Especially noteworthy is the\u00a0<strong>Golden Ball<\/strong>\u00a0on the tip of the building. The\u00a0<strong>ball<\/strong>\u00a0represents the\u00a0<strong>world<\/strong>\u00a0which rests on the shoulders of\u00a0<strong>two<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Atlas figures<\/strong>. On top of the world stands the figure of\u00a0<strong>Fortune<\/strong>, which rotates to indicate the\u00a0<strong>wind\u2019s direction<\/strong>, and of course the randomness of fortune itself. A perfect fusion of\u00a0<strong>beauty<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>function<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>melancholy<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>irony<\/strong>: the essence of\u00a0<strong>Venice<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-512f89c elementor-align-center
