Martino in the Sestiere di Castello<\/strong>. Among the various meanings of the origin of the name we report that of the Masons that seems more relevant and that is dock, a word of Arabic origin that indicates the place where the ships are manufactured and stored.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-417589d elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"417589d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"235\" src=\"https:\/\/www.venicecitytours.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/arsenale-venezia.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-1336\" alt=\"View of the Venice Arsenal with entrance towers, wooden bridge and gondolas on the canal, a symbol of the maritime past of the Serenissima.\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.venicecitytours.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/arsenale-venezia.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.venicecitytours.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/arsenale-venezia-300x141.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da72d62 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"da72d62\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-acbfcc4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"acbfcc4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Origins<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab704c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab704c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Founded around 1104<\/strong>\u00a0under the\u00a0<strong>Doge Ordelafo Falier<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<strong>two islands<\/strong>\u00a0called the\u00a0<strong>Gemelle<\/strong>, it was continuously expanded and enriched\u00a0<strong>from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century<\/strong>\u00a0by new and increasingly suitable buildings called via\u00a0<strong>Arsenale nuovo\u00a0(1325), Arsenale nuovissimo (1473), Riparto delle Galeazze (1539), Canale delle Galeazze and Vasca (1564)<\/strong>. In\u00a0<strong>1579<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Antonio da Ponte<\/strong>\u00a0rebuilt the\u00a0<strong>Casa del Can\u00e8vo<\/strong>, founded in the\u00a0<strong>14th century<\/strong>.<br \/><br \/>It is surrounded and protected by\u00a0<strong>high walls and square towers<\/strong>\u00a0with the sign of the\u00a0<strong>Lion of St. Mark<\/strong>. The\u00a0<strong>entrance<\/strong>\u00a0is protected by an advanced\u00a0<strong>barrier<\/strong>, built in\u00a0<strong>1682<\/strong>, with eight statues overhanging the pillars, which are pagan gods and with four lions, brought to\u00a0<strong>Venice<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0<strong>Attica<\/strong>\u00a0by\u00a0<strong>Francesco Morosini<\/strong>. The door, erected in 1460, was transformed in 1688 into a large portal, almost a triumphal arch, with emblems and war trophies in honour of Morosini.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-76357dc elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"76357dc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f3ceb33 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f3ceb33\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The government of Arsenale and the Arsenalotti<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-517cb89 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"517cb89\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The\u00a0<strong>government of Arsenale<\/strong>\u00a0was entrusted to\u00a0<strong>three patricians<\/strong>, elected among the<strong>\u00a0members of the Great Council<\/strong>, experts in maritime affairs called\u00a0<strong>Provveditori or Patrons at the Arsenale<\/strong>, and they were called patron on guard, patron cashier and patron in bank; they remained in office for thirty-two months and lived in lodgings called &#8220;Inferno&#8221; &#8220;Purgatory&#8221; and &#8220;Paradise&#8221;, as is still witnessed today by the toponymy; to these three patricians were added, later on, two others and then a third with the title of\u00a0<strong>Super Provveditori all&#8217;Arsenal<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The\u00a0<strong>work inside<\/strong>\u00a0was done by the workers: the\u00a0<strong>Arsenalotti<\/strong>. It began at the tolling of a bell that began at the same time as the touch of the\u00a0<strong>Marangona<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>the largest bell in San Marco<\/strong>); the Arsenalotti worked\u00a0<strong>until sunset<\/strong>\u00a0with a\u00a0<strong>two-hour break<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0<strong>lunch<\/strong>. They were almost never fired and kept\u00a0<strong>their place<\/strong>\u00a0even\u00a0<strong>in times of calamity<\/strong>\u00a0such as\u00a0<strong>plague<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>labour surpluses<\/strong>\u00a0and so on.
