Until recently,\u00a0it only held the classic French gambling games dating back centuries, but one can find more modern American-style games now, with a whole room dedicated to Texas Hold\u2019Em Poker.\n\nGambling aside, the building dates back to the\u00a0<strong>15th century<\/strong>, and it changed hands many times before the\u00a0<strong>Richard Wagner<\/strong>\u00a0rented twenty of its rooms in\u00a0<strong>1882<\/strong>; he would die here only a year later, happy to spend his last days in\u00a0<strong>Venice<\/strong>\u00a0in the company of his family and gondolier. The walls in many of the rooms still have the same drapes chosen by him as a tribute to his memory.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da72d62 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"da72d62\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-acbfcc4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"acbfcc4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Santa Fosca<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab704c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab704c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Here we are in\u00a0<strong>Campo Santa Fosca<\/strong>, which seems more of a transitory spot but is actually rich in history, much of it rather violent.<\/p><p>At the centre stands\u00a0<strong>Fra\u2019 Paolo Sarpi<\/strong>, a Venetian friar and one of the great figures of the<strong>\u00a0Ventian Republic history, the Serenissima<\/strong>. In the\u00a0<strong>17<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Venice\u2019s empire<\/strong>\u00a0had grown so powerful that it became increasingly independent from the Church\u2019s dictates in Rome; and when the\u00a0<strong>Pope<\/strong>\u00a0then finally excommunicated the city of\u00a0<strong>Venice<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Sarpi<\/strong>, a staunch patriot, defended its liberty, fiercely condemning the Church\u2019s intrusions in\u00a0<strong>Venetian affairs<\/strong>.<\/p><p>And so, on an October night in\u00a0<strong>1607<\/strong>, three hitmen sent by the Pope ambushed Sarpi here in this square and stabbed him three times.<\/p><p>Fortunately, he survived, even if barely, and became a celebrity advocate of Venice\u2019s independence and anti-Papal struggles.\u00a0 Look to\u00a0<strong>Ponte della Guerra<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>Bridge of War<\/strong>; it might seem calm now but this is where fights regularly took place, with two teams meeting in the middle armed with pointed scalding sticks.<\/p><p>Deaths were not uncommon, and in time weapons were banned and was moderated to just fist-fighting, much like another Venetian bridge, aptly called the\u00a0<strong>Bridge of Fists<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-07ede3f elementor-align-center elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-button\" data-id=\"07ede3f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"button.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-button-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-button elementor-button-link elementor-size-xl\" href=\"https:\/\/www.venicecitytours.it\/en\/categories\/top-sellers\/\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-button-content-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-button-text\">DISCOVER OUR BEST TOURS<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-76357dc elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"76357dc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ca&#8217; Vendramin Calergi, a Renaissance palace on the Grand Canal, houses the Venice Casino and Wagner Museum.
