of San Maurizio<\/strong>, and in this square\u00a0<strong>antiques markets<\/strong>\u00a0are often held. Originally\u00a0one of the oldest churches in\u00a0<strong>Venice<\/strong>, it was completely rebuilt in\u00a0<strong>1806<\/strong>\u00a0when Venice was under\u00a0<strong>Napoleon\u2019s rule<\/strong>\u00a0and so is often ignored by admirers of the\u00a0<strong>Venetian Republic<\/strong>. It is a plain church in\u00a0<strong>neo-classical style<\/strong>. The ancient\u00a0<strong>bell-tower<\/strong>\u00a0you see is actually part of the\u00a0<strong>Church of Santo Stefano<\/strong>\u00a0on the other side. In\u00a0<strong>1319<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>Church of San Maurizio<\/strong>\u00a0was the scene of an infamous\u00a0<strong>scandal<\/strong>, when the\u00a0<strong>Parish priest<\/strong>\u00a0murdered another rival priest for money. He was sentenced to the \u2013\u00a0<strong>cheba<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 which meant he was confined to live out his days in a\u00a0<strong>cage<\/strong>\u00a0which was hung publically at the top of\u00a0<strong>Saint Mark\u2019s bell-tower<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da72d62 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"da72d62\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-acbfcc4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"acbfcc4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Santa Maria del Giglio\n\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab704c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab704c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Santa Maria del Giglio<\/strong>\u00a0appears the most worldly\u00a0<strong>church<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>Venice<\/strong>, because\u00a0<strong>carvings<\/strong>\u00a0on its\u00a0<strong>fa\u00e7ade<\/strong>\u00a0depict\u00a0<strong>fortified cities<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>warships<\/strong>. Until the late\u00a0<strong>16<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Venice<\/strong>\u00a0strongly prohibited any display of\u00a0<strong>personal wealth<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>cult of personality<\/strong>, as it was seen as a danger to the stability and power of the\u00a0<strong>Republic<\/strong>.<\/p><p>This\u00a0<strong>church<\/strong>\u00a0was one of the first to break those rules as it depicts the naval and diplomatic career of the nobleman\u00a0<strong>Antonio Barbaro<\/strong>, who paid for the building of the fa\u00e7ade as his monument; you will his\u00a0<strong>statue<\/strong>\u00a0at the very centre of the\u00a0<strong>fa\u00e7ade<\/strong>, flanked by the figures of\u00a0<strong>Honour<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Virtue<\/strong>. The four statues lined at the bottom are of his brothers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b95e941 elementor-align-center
