in\u00a0<strong>Venice<\/strong>, this too originally came from an apparition in a dream. The\u00a0<strong>Bishop Alberto Magno<\/strong>\u00a0arrived in\u00a0<strong>Venice<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>7<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century AD<\/strong>, and allegedly dreamt that the\u00a0<strong>Holy Mary<\/strong>\u00a0had told him to look out for a cloud stopping still in the sky; wherever its shadow beat on was where the church should have been built. Since the priest only talked of a form of the\u00a0<strong>Madonna<\/strong>\u00a0in his dream, the\u00a0<strong>Church<\/strong>\u00a0aquired the name of\u00a0<strong>Formosa<\/strong>, although\u00a0<strong>formosa<\/strong>\u00a0also means\u00a0<strong>\u2018shapely\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>Italian<\/strong>\u00a0and it\u2019s been suggested the name comes from a lost painting of a rather buxom-looking Madonna.<\/p><p>As many churches,\u00a0<strong>Santa Maria Formosa<\/strong>\u00a0was built at\u00a0<strong>various intervals<\/strong>, you\u2019ll notice the main\u00a0<strong>fa\u00e7ade<\/strong>\u00a0looking onto the campo is\u00a0<strong>18<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century baroque<\/strong>\u00a0in style, whereas the\u00a0<strong>entrance<\/strong>\u00a0on the\u00a0<strong>canal side<\/strong>\u00a0is more\u00a0<strong>classical<\/strong>, and so somewhat\u00a0<strong>earlier<\/strong>.<\/p><p>If you\u2019re on this side, you\u2019ll see a grotesque head above the entrance which was built to fight off the devil, who wanted to enter the church and bang on the\u00a0<strong>bells<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>tower<\/strong>\u00a0to create chaos amongst the people, since the day\u2019s work schedule was broken down according to well-established bell tolls.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da72d62 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"da72d62\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-acbfcc4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"acbfcc4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Campo Santa Maria Formosa<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab704c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab704c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Since the\u00a0<strong>9<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century<\/strong>, every\u00a0<strong>2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0of February<\/strong>\u00a0all\u00a0<strong>Venetian women<\/strong>\u00a0who were to be married within the year would dress up and take part in an event of\u00a0<strong>purification<\/strong>; one year, it went rather wrong when a group of\u00a0<strong>pirates<\/strong>\u00a0stormed the\u00a0<strong>cerimony<\/strong>\u00a0and kidnapped\u00a0<strong>12 of the girls<\/strong>; the\u00a0<strong>Venetians<\/strong>, however, chased the kidnappers and managed to save the girls before they were shipped away.<\/p><p>And so, every year\u00a0<strong>Venice<\/strong>\u00a0began to celebrate the\u00a0<strong>Festa delle Marie<\/strong>\u00a0in this square,\u00a0<strong>Campo Santa Maria Formosa<\/strong>, a new celebration in honour of the\u00a0<strong>Holy Mary<\/strong>; the\u00a0<strong>12 most beautiful girls<\/strong>\u00a0from the city\u2019s\u00a0<strong>poorest families<\/strong>\u00a0were chosen and entrusted each to a\u00a0<strong>wealthy family<\/strong>, who would clothe them in rich garments and jewellery and parade them along the\u00a0<strong>Grand Canal<\/strong>.<\/p><p>This in time attracted men from all over\u00a0<strong>Italy<\/strong>\u00a0and other\u00a0<strong>European cities<\/strong>. Given the high visibility and honour of the occasion, it wasn\u2019t long before fights broke out amongst the poor families or the rowdy male public, and so the girls were substituted by wooden carvings of female figures, called\u00a0<strong>Maria de Tola<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Plank Mary<\/strong>, which is how Venetians sometimes still refer to\u00a0<strong>dull women<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e27aa2d elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"e27aa2d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ee584fc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ee584fc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Museo Querini Stampalia<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a2477a7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a2477a7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe elegant red building separated by a small canal is the\u00a0<strong>Museo Querini Stampalia<\/strong>. The\u00a0<strong>Querini family<\/strong>\u00a0were one\u00a0of the oldest and wealthiest in\u00a0<strong>Venice<\/strong>, and often it was expected that someone from a founding family would become\u00a0<strong>Doge<\/strong>, that is, the highest position in the city. However, back in\u00a0<strong>1310<\/strong>\u00a0a\u00a0<strong>famous plot<\/strong>\u00a0to overthrow the standing ruling class was thwarted by the Doge\u2019s soldiers, and among the key plotters was the young\u00a0<strong>Marco Querini<\/strong>; he was immediately executed, and the family was for ever excluded from running for the dogeship.\n\nA relative of his, however, managed to escape and ended up on the\u00a0<strong>island of Stampalia<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>Greece<\/strong>, hence the name\u00a0<strong>Querini-Stampalia<\/strong>. Much time passed, and in the\u00a0<strong>18<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century<\/strong>\u00a0the last family heir\u00a0<strong>Giovanni Querini Stampalia<\/strong>, a scientist, man of letters and silk merchant left this building to Venice, specifying in his will that it should be used \u2018especially for evening assemblies of scholars and scientists\u2019. Today, the first floor is one of the most loved\u00a0<strong>public libraries<\/strong>\u00a0by students, exactly as he would have wished.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div
