data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0seems to have arisen out of necessity in the early days of Venice; there were not many bridges to cross the waters from one side of the city to the other. As time went on, these boats became more and more elaborate and ornate. Nobles and the upper middle class embellished them with\u00a0<\/span><strong>designs<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><strong>inlays<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"none\">, covering them with silk and satin. It is thought that &#8220;gondola&#8221; comes from the name of a type of boat built in India, brought to Europe by merchants and then adapted for Venice.
