Employed\u00a0<strong>gondoliers<\/strong>\u00a0worked for them at a rather low pay.<\/p><p><strong>Gondoliers\u00a0<\/strong>were essentially\u00a0<strong>taxi drivers<\/strong>, so they were always in step with the gossip surrounding the city&#8217;s elite members, who went to\u00a0<strong>brothels<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>gambling houses\u00a0<\/strong>or simply spent\u00a0<strong>private time\u00a0<\/strong>with their\u00a0<strong>lovers\u00a0<\/strong>inside the gondola\u00a0<em>felze<\/em>, a cover in the\u00a0<strong>center of the gondola\u00a0<\/strong>that provided the much-needed secrecy. And it is precisely because they knew so much about so many that\u00a0<strong>gondoliers\u00a0<\/strong>were excused for being\u00a0<strong>loud\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>brash<\/strong>.
