High water in Venice: what to know and how to behave

High water is a natural phenomenon that occurs in Venice when sea levels rise above normal, causing some areas of the city to flood. This phenomenon is more common in the autumn and winter months, often due to high tides, strong winds and adverse weather conditions.

During these events, the canals rise and many calli, especially the lower ones, can be submerged.

When you are in Venice during high water, it is important to follow some instructions.

What to do:

  • Find out about the forecast and water levels by checking the HI!TIDE app.
  • Use waterproof boots or shoes suitable for walking in flooded areas.
  • It is useful to have a map of the city to plan alternative routes.

Furthermore:

  • Avoid walking in deep water, as it may be dangerous.
  • Don’t block the passage by stopping to take photos in the middle of the flow.
  • It is not advisable to travel to areas particularly affected by high water without informing yourself about the situation first.

High water, although representing a challenge, will not prevent you from visiting Venice, on the contrary: with the right precautions, it will transform into an opportunity to discover unusual corners of the city in a different light.
