Burano: did you know…?

What makes Burano so enchanting that it looks like it stepped out of a postcard?
Beyond its iconic colorful houses, this island in the Venetian Lagoon holds centuries-old stories and traditions that make it truly unique. Here are three you might not know:

Regulated colors
Have you ever wondered who decided to paint Burano’s houses in such vibrant colors?
According to legend, it was the fishermen who started the tradition: when returning home through the lagoon’s fog, they needed to recognize their house from afar. Even today, changing a house’s color requires official permission: each shade must follow a predefined scheme.

The lace that charmed europe

Burano lace, entirely handcrafted with needle and thread, was so exquisite that it was sought after by European courts in the 16th century. Today, you can still see lace-makers at work, living witnesses of a delicate and ancient art.

The sailors’ sweets

The Bussolai, cookies made with butter, eggs, and vanilla, were originally baked to last during long fishing trips. Today, they’re a local treat to enjoy as you stroll through the narrow streets.
